Winner of the 2003 RAIA William Wardell Award, the $3m Woodleigh School Science Building was delivered by fixed lump sum contract following a competitive tender process.
Works involved demolition of the existing external basketball courts, portable classroom areas and school maintenance compound to make way for a new science faculty building. Site preparation works included the construction of a 3m high retaining wall to conceal a new saltwater storage tank to service the central aquarium.
The 1200m2 building includes five teaching rooms with substantial laboratory spaces containing purpose built joinery, specialist lighting and new fume cupboards. A greenhouse, project room, store rooms and preparation room surrounds the classrooms to provide a highly functional teaching facility.
Innovative use of finished materials including timber and rusted steelwork featured throughout the project as well as a roof constructed from opaque fibreglass with natural daylight entering into all areas via a slotted timber ceiling.
Construction was completed in late 2002 with this being the third facility delivered by 91ÐÓ°É Constructions for Woodleigh School.
From the first site meeting right through to handover, their professionalism was always evident.
